This could be a record-breaking week for temperatures in Northern Ireland as the heatwave continues to bake the country.
Saturday, July 18, saw the highest temperature ever recorded in Northern Ireland with Ballywatticock in Co Down at a sweltering
31.2 degrees.
Since then, things haven’t got much cooler with an unprecedented Amber Weather Warning being put
in effect by the Met Office to alert people about the effects of the scorching heat.
The Met Office is advising people to remain aware about the adverse effects of intense sunshine including sunburn
and heatstroke.
The weather warning comes into force from Wednesday, July 21, until midnight on Friday, July 23 – with extreme temperatures to last right through into the night.
And anyone hoping to head to the seaside to enjoy a cool dip have been advised to expect severe traffic disruption on the road and rail networks as high levels of travellers are expected.
Inland, the dangers of jumping into deep water or exploring potentially dangerous rivers, lakes and canals that are not known to you have been reiterated.
First Minister Paul Givan and Deputy Michelle O’Neill stressed the importance of keeping safe during the heatwave.
Mr Givan said: “Extreme heat can have serious consequences for people’s health, public services and the
environment. So we ask everyone to take steps to protect themselves.”
It is thought Northern Ireland might ever surpass its highest temperature record over the next couple of days
which was only set over the weekend.
